Three people are dead following a scaffolding collapse at a North Carolina construction site.

The incident occurred Monday morning in Charlotte, where a scaffold on which five construction crew members were working suddenly gave way, according to the Charlotte Fire Department.

The workers plummeted more than 70 feet to the ground -- and then were hit by a wall that also fell from the building.

Three of the workers were pronounced dead at the scene, the fire department said. Two others were rushed to a local hospital but neither were seriously hurt, WSOC-TV reported.

Aerial footage from WSOC-TV shows the broken scaffolding hanging at an angle along the side of a building. Directly underneath was what looked like scaffolding on the ground and wood scattered around it, the outlet reported.

The cause of the collapse is still being determined, officials said. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.

Work at the site has been postponed until the investigation is complete.
