Travis Kelce: Noah Gray is 'lightyears ahead of where I was' as a rookie

The rookie tight end got some pretty strong praise from Kelce on Wednesday.

Life's pretty good for Chiefs' rookie tight end Noah Gray right now. As far as first experiences go, it's hard to beat getting drafted into an Andy Reid offense, run by Patrick Mahomes, and studying behind Travis Kelce -- all while getting a not-insignificant amount of playing time along the way. The 5th round draft pick out of Duke seems to be holding his own, too; after Wednesday afternoon's practice, Kelce -- talking exclusively with 610's Cody and Gold -- spoke at length about how impressed he's been with Gray, and what he expects from the rookie in his first season.

"He's lightyears ahead of where I was my rookie year, I can tell you that," Kelce said. "I was getting yelled at by Coach Reid up and down the field, I remember it like it was yesterday. He's doing a great job getting into his playbook, coming out here and playing fast, and learning from the reps. Half of the battle is getting the opportunities to run these routes, to run these plays, so you can absorb the information on every play and get better because of it.

"The biggest thing is playing confident. Playing confident in this offense, you've got to know a lot of stuff. Especially at the position that me and him are at. Not just the overall tight end position, but you get to be a moving aspect of the offense. You get tossed into every scenario possible. So you've got to know all the running back's rules. You've got to know the wide receiver's rules. You've also got to know the quarterback's drops and timings and his reads so that you're always on time with everything going on out on the field."
