Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce is adding Major League Baseball team owner to his résumé.

Kelce has purchased a minority stake in the Cleveland Guardians, the team confirmed this week. The Cleveland Heights native said the move is a chance to reconnect with the city and franchise he grew up supporting.

“I’m just a kid from the Heights living the dream,” Kelce said in an interview with ESPN, adding that Cleveland helped shape his values, work ethic and appreciation for community.

Kelce said owning part of the Guardians is “a dream come true for any Cleveland kid.” The three-time Super Bowl champion has often talked about his love for Cleveland sports and his childhood memories of the Guardians’ successful teams in the 1990s.

Financial terms of the investment were not released. Reports say Kelce purchased a portion of the stake previously held by investor David Blitzer.

The move continues Kelce’s growing business portfolio outside football. He already owns stakes in several companies and sports ventures, including the Alpine Formula One team.

Kelce is entering his 14th NFL season with the Chiefs after signing a new deal earlier this offseason. Despite his success in Kansas City, he said Cleveland will always be home.

The Guardians currently sit near the top of the American League Central standings as Kelce joins the franchise’s ownership group.
