A horse sustained a catastrophic injury while training at Santa Anita this week -- and had to be euthanized. The horse is the 27th horse to die after training or racing at Santa Anita.
The colt River Derby fractured a shoulder Wednesday, but the injury was too severe and the horse had to be put down at a clinic in Chino,
according to the Los Angeles Times. CA Horse Racing Board says horse was hurt while galloping during training hours yesterday morning and veterinarians "determined that surgery was not an option and euthanized the horse. A necropsy will be performed." @KNX1070 https://t.co/mcLPc3V8o7

June 6, 2019 Twenty-seven horses have died at Santa Anita since late December and this latest is the fourth fatality since the middle of May.
The owners of the race track have implemented new safety guidelines.
California Horse Racing Board spokesman Mike Marten told the LA Times that “in the interest of full transparency, we will be treating it as an on-track training death and do a full necropsy and count it in the statistics.”
