A fire heavily damaged a single-story commercial building in the south Los Angeles area today, but no one was hurt, authorities said.

The fire was reported shortly before 9 a.m. in the 3100 block of South Main Street, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The flames were extinguished shortly before 11 a.m.

>After an initial attack on the flames, firefighters went into a defensive mode, pouring water onto the building from the outside in an effort to prevent the flames from spreading to other structures.

"The fire was fueled by textiles inside the business," LAFD spokesman Nicholas Prange said. "The roof collapsed on top of the burning textiles with no one inside (and) no compromise to surrounding structural integrity."

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
