Fill Up Now – California's Gas Tax Goes into Effect Today

California drivers better fill up their tanks before Monday.

California will be paying about six more cents per gallon for gas starting today as the state's new gas tax hits consumers.

The tax will increase from 41.7 cents to 47.3 cents per gallon.

In 2016 the state tax was 28 cents per gallon.

According to the AAA website, California drivers were paying $3.754 per gallon. 

According to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, the rates are in effect from July 1 to June 30, 2020:

In 2017, the state legislature passed a 10-year gas tax and fee increase, which hopes to ultimately raise about  $52 billion for transportation projects.
