LA City Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson's Twitter account was temporarily suspended - along with some from his staff and family members.
Harris-Dawson's account was back up and running as of mid-Friday afternoon.
A Twitter spokesperson told KNX reporter Claudia Peschiutta "the council member's account was mistakenly caught by one of our spam tools. It has since been reinstated. Folks experiencing this should have received an email from support explaining this mistake, but if not they are still able to go through our appeals form to ensure their account is restored. "
The spokesperson for Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson says some of the other accounts remain suspended.
Harris-Dawson says it wasn't just his account that was suspended late Thursday night. Some of his relatives and staff members were also affected.
Earlier on Friday LA Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson told KNX reporter Claudia Peschiutta that “My Twitter account along with some [of> my staff & family members were banned late last night. All my content has been informational in nature & decidedly benign. We are certain this a mistake by Twitter or some kind of prank.”
Leading up to the suspension of his account, Harris-Dawson had retweeted posts from Congresswoman Karen Bass, Senator Kamala Harris and former First Lady Michelle Obama.
"It's highly suspect coming at the end of the Democratic National Convention, so if it was spam because the content was seen repackaged by trolls elsewhere and it got caught up in the algorithm that Twitter uses it might not be aimed at the Councilman's account specifically but at trolls who were replicating that account or that message across any number of public officials,"USC public policy professor Dora Kingsley Vertenten says.
