California Governor Gavin Newsom is asking the state attorney general to investigate the rise of gas prices in terms of price-fixing or other unfair practices.
In a letter to Atty. Gen. Xavier Becerra, Newsom is demanding to know why name-brand gas retailers are charging more for a gallon of gas, than unbranded, hypermart competitors. "There is no identifiable evidence to justify these premium prices," Newsom wrote.
According to the AAA, gas prices in California currently hover around $4.44, whereas the national average is $2.65.
