(KNX 1070) -- A claim for nearly $200 million in damages has been filed against the City of Los Angeles by the family of a man who's been in a coma since October after allegedly being beaten up by an off-duty Los Angeles Police Officer.
According to the attorney representing Alton Preston Jr's family, Preston was trying to be a Good Samaritan by stepping in to break up a fight outside the Hide a While lounge in Rancho Cucamonga when one of the men involved, an off-duty Los Angeles police officer hit him over the head with a beer bottle knocking him into the ground, where he became unconscious. The officer allegedly picked up a metal sign and continued to hit Preston with it, according to Preston Jr.'s Go Fund Me page.
Attorney Carl Douglas says Alton's brother tried to rush him to the hospital, but local police began pursuing him, leading to a pit maneuver that flipped the car over.
We reached out the LAPD, but they do not comment on civil litigation.
