The world is in the grips of another pandemic, and it's called Dead Butt Syndrome.
Dead Butt Syndrome, or DBS, is when you experience pain, numbness or tingling in and around your butt muscles. It's usually caused by sitting too much.
With most of the population working from home the last 18 months, we've all been sitting a lot more. Dr. Tyler Detmer, a physical therapist at Washington University at St. Louis, told Lifehacker, "Once these symptoms persist for more than an hour or two, and you’re really noticing that they are affecting you during the day, […] then that would be something I would recommend getting further medical evaluation for."
Doctors want to clarify, however, that DBS is not actually a formal diagnosis, but rather an "umbrella term" for a variety of issues that can cause these symptoms.
If it feels like your butt is asleep for more than an hour or two, and this is a frequent occurrence, then you might have DBS. However, doctors offer a simple solution: Just stand up and stretch every half hour or so.
