On Thursday, Apple announced that by the year 2025, it will make major changes to how it constructs its devices, as it has vowed to use 100% recycled cobalt in all Apple-designed batteries.
The tech company shared the news in a press release, but it wasn’t the only promise towards sustainability the company made.
In the release, Apple shared that it will also work to ensure all magnets used in Apple devices, most notably in its magsafe products, will be made from recycled rare Earth elements by the same target year. The company will also use 100% recycled tin soldering and gold plating on all Apple-designed printed circuit boards.
This is not the first time the company has made a push towards using more recycled materials, as in 2022, Apple expanded to sourcing 66% of all aluminum, 73% of all rare earths, and more than 95% of its tungsten from 100% recycled materials.
“Our ambition to one day use 100 percent recycled and renewable materials in our products works hand in hand with Apple 2030: our goal to achieve carbon neutral products by 2030,” Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, said in the release.
Apple continued to put focus on its 2030 goal of being carbon neutral, and now it says this action will help pave the way for the company to meet that goal.
“Every day, Apple is innovating to make technology that enriches people’s lives while protecting the planet we all share,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a press release.
Apple garnered attention in 2018 when it launched its device recycling machine, Daisy, which it boasted could “disassemble 1.2 million devices per year.”
In 2018 the “company refurbished more than 7.8 million Apple devices and helped divert more than 48,000 metric tons of electronic waste from landfills.”
This has been a constant goal of Apple now for the past half-decade, and Cook says it helps define the company.
“From the recycled materials in our products, to the clean energy that powers our operations, our environmental work is integral to everything we make and to who we are,” Cook said. “So we’ll keep pressing forward in the belief that great technology should be great for our users, and for the environment.”
Products that will soon have 100% recycled cobalt in them will include the “iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, MacBook, and many other products” that Apple says “represent a significant majority of the company’s use of cobalt.”
