A vehicle that was southbound on Alvarado Street collided with a vehicle that was westbound on Eighth Street, the officer said.
The impact sent the southbound vehicle careening onto the sidewalk on the southwest corner of the intersection and into the two men, he said.
Paramedics rushed the injured pedestrians to a hospital where the 45- year-old man was pronounced dead and the other man was listed in critical condition, the officer said.
The status of the two drivers was not available.
