The criminal complaint charges Richard Pedroza, 28, of Alhambra, and Daniel Rios, 26, of La Habra, with one count each murder and shooting at an occupied vehicle and two counts each of attempted murder.

The murder charge includes the special-circumstance allegations of murder while lying in wait and murder during a drive-by shooting, along with allegations that they each personally discharged a handgun.

Pedroza is also facing one count of possession of a firearm by a felon, while Rios is charged with two counts of  possession of a firearm by a felon.

The two allegedly opened fire in a car-to-car shooting Aug. 1, 2023 on the southbound 57 Freeway north of Pathfinder Road, killing one person and injuring another, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Shots were also allegedly fired at another person, who was not hit, authorities said.

"If you think you can turn our freeways into shooting galleries and terrorize our communities with callous violence, think again," District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in a statement announcing the charges. "This reckless attack cost one man his life and left another (person) injured. Innocent people simply traveling the freeway, just trying to get to their destination, could easily have been caught in the crossfire and killed."

Pedroza and Rios were arrested Tuesday by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Apprehension Team, according to the District Attorney's Office.

The two remain jailed without bail while awaiting arraignment Sept. 12 in a Pomona courtroom.
