The fire was reported at 10:47 a.m. Monday in the 1100 block of South Elm Drive, according to Lyndsey Lantz of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The nonagenarian, who sustained minor injuries, was rescued from an apartment next to the one where the fire broke out, Lantz said. She and the man were in fair condition when taken to a hospital, according to Lantz.

The fire was contained to the unit of origin, "with adjacent units and floors above successfully protected from fire impingement."

Forty-four firefighters responded and put the blaze out in 26 minutes, she said.

Traffic in the area was expected to be affected while crews mopped up.
