The Los Angeles Police Department released its 2025 crime report on Thursday and the numbers show homicides are down to the lowest level in decades.

According to LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, homicides dropped 19% from 284 murders to 230 in 2025, saying it was the lowest number since 1966.

“A reduction in homicides means fewer families experiencing that devastating loss and fewer communities living with the lasting trauma that violence creates,” he said.

The chief said he believes taking thousands of guns off the streets and taking the most violent criminals off the streets helped bring down the number of homicides.

“I look at the work, and I go back to the gun seizures that were made, the homicide arrests that were made over, you know, over 300 homicide arrests tells the story of people who are out there committing crimes,” he said. “There's a relatively small number of people who commit an inordinate amount of crime.

Moore added the department’s gang and narcotics division made over 1,000 arrests and confiscated more than 2,300 firearms in the process. He also said the department has detained more than 100 burglars.
