
Five people were killed in a plane crash on Catalina Island on Tuesday night.
At 8:08 p.m., the Avalon Sheriff Station received an S.O.S. emergency notification from a cell phone.
“The device that the user's cell phone had been involved in a collision with possible injuries and provided a location to the deputies via GPS coordinates,” Deputy Daniel Dominguez told KNX News’ Jon Baird.
Deputies responded to the scene joined by the L.A. County Fire Department, Avalon Search and Rescue, and members of the Avalon City Fire Department, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.
The twin-engine aircraft was found one mile west of Catalina Island Airport. The five victims, all adults, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The plane was a Beechcraft 95, Federal Aviation Administration Public Affairs Specialist Rick Breitenfeldt told City News Service. He added that the plane crashed shortly after leaving the Catalina Airport.
The National Transportation Safety Board, the FAA, and the sheriff’s station are investigating the crash.
