Nine firefighters were injured, two critically, in a truck explosion in the Wilmington area Thursday morning.

It happened on 1120 N Alameda Street just before 7 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

"We had firefighters that responded to a truck that had pressurized cylinders and the truck was on fire," LAFD Capt. Erik Scott told KNX News' Jon Baird. "Subsequently, an explosion on scene occurred that tragic injured."

Initially, LAFD reported there were seven firefighters injured and that three were taken to the hospital with two in critical condition.

During a press conference Thursday afternoon, Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley said there were nine firefighters injured with two in critical condition.

Chief Crowley added that one of the firefighters in critical condition is stable but is staying at the hospital for additional observation. The other had to be intubated and was taken to the burn unit at Los Angeles General Medical Center.

Dr. Molly Deane of Harbor UCLA Medical Center added that the firefighters had various levels of burns and injuries.

"Frankly it's remarkable none of them were more severely injured," she said.

Capt. Scott said the driver of the truck that exploded was not injured and that she called 911 when she noticed something was wrong with it.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
