Afghan expat reacts to Taliban takeover in Afghanistan

'The Taliban are complete sociopaths...'

As the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan has left thousands of Afghans running for safety, many Afghanistan expats in the United States are watching the events unfold in horror.

One of those expats is Mizgnon Darby. Darby, who lives in California and runs the "Lead by Learning" program at Mills College, told KNX In Depth she's worried for the women in Afghanistan.

"The Taliban are complete sociopaths who have come forward and indicated that they will not harm women, yet they are kidnapping and taking 13 to 15-year-old girls from their mothers and marrying them off to the soldiers," she said.

"My fear for the Afghan women is that they get hidden away and abused and not allowed to pursue education or to move forward in their lives as they have been doing in the last 20 years."

When asked if she was surprised by how quickly the Afghan forces gave up and ran like President Biden said he was in Monday's press conference, Darby said no.

"The Taliban had gained a great amount of traction and it came down to survival," she said.

"The soldiers knew that if they did not put down their arms and hide their uniforms that they would be killed the moment that the Taliban entered Kabul for example and we saw that happening. It’s not a surprise that the Taliban swept through Afghanistan in three days either. They had a lot of strength and I think that strength was being minimalized by our government here in the United States."
