Andrés Chait has been named the new superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District, days after Alberto Carvalho announced his resignation.
The Board of Education made the announcement after a closed-session discussion on Monday.
"After careful consideration, the Board determined that Andrés Chait is uniquely qualified to lead this District,” Board President Scott Schmerelson said in a statement. “He knows our schools, understands our challenges, has earned the trust of employees and school communities, and has already demonstrated his ability to lead with integrity, transparency, and a relentless focus on students."
In a statement, Chait said his focus is on the students.
“Together, we will continue strengthening academic outcomes, supporting our workforce, maintaining safe and welcoming schools, and ensuring that every decision we make is guided by what is best for the students and families we serve,” he said.
Chait has been serving as acting superintendent since Carvalho was placed on leave in February amid an FBI probe tied to district contracts, including a failed AI chatbot venture that he reportedly brought to the LAUSD.
