California Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo, who’s also running for Kevin de Leόn’s seat on the Los Angeles City Council, pleaded no contest Friday to DUI charges.
Carrillo, who represents parts of northeastern and East L.A., was arrested in November after reportedly crashing into two parked cars while driving under the influence. She pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges and was sentenced to 50 hours of community service, a 3-month alcohol program, and fines and fees totaling about $2000.
Despite the criminal charges, Carrillo has no plans to pause her City Council campaign. She’s one of seven candidates running against the embattled de Leόn in District 14, which includes Boyle Heights, downtown L.A., and parts of Northeast L.A.
“She wanted to accept responsibility, because she’s very responsible, and she’s dedicated to herself and to her constituents as well,” Carrillo’s attorney, Alex Kessel, told KNX News’ Craig Fiegener. “I think she’s addressed the issue by accepting responsibility and not fighting the charges and paying for any damage that she’s incurred.”
Kessel said Carrillo’s insurance will cover the physical damage to the other vehicles.
