Suspect arrested following hours-long barricade situation in Canyon Country

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (KNX) – Deputies have arrested the armed suspect following an hours-long barricade situation in Canyon Country that caused nearby streets to be closed off and residents in the area to evacuate.

The incident was first reported around 6:22 a.m., according to KCAL.

“Deputies are currently investigating an armed barricaded suspect on the 19000 block of Newhouse Street in Canyon Country,” the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station tweeted. “The area of Delight Street and Whites Canyon Road has been closed off. Please avoid the area.”

The suspect was barricaded inside a parked white SUV, City News Service reported. The suspect reportedly threw his weapon out of the when the armored vehicles began boxing him in, according to ABC 7.

Homes along the 19000 block of Newhouse Street were evacuated, according to City News Service. Those who evacuated were being accommodated at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Schools in the area remained open.

At 12:17 p.m., the Santa Clarita Sheriff's station tweeted, "The suspect has been taken into custody and the area has been cleared. Evacuations are still in place as deputies continue on with their investigation."
