Jackie laid her first egg of the season last Wednesday. On Saturday, faithful watchers of Friends of Big Bear Valley’s live cam spotted a second egg.

It takes, on average, 38 to 39 days before we know if the eggs will hatch into eaglets, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley’s Sandy Steers. Last year, none of the pair’s three eggs hatched.

“We never know what's going to happen,” Steers told KNX News’ Karen Adams. “The statistics in general is only about 50% of the eagle eggs hatch, and then, you know, it’s up to nature whether they survive from there.”

She said there are any number of reasons why eggs don’t hatch – it may be due to environmental conditions, or they may just not be fertilized.

Jackie and Shadow’s last eaglet, Spirit, was born in 2022.
