Boyle Heights community demands closure of Lineage warehouse

The Boyle Heights community is demanding that the facility where the toxic warehouse fire happened be shut down.

On Thursday, families and community organizations gathered at Olympic Blvd. and La Puerta St. demanding environmental justice.

“We want the permanent closure of Lineage Logistics here at Boyle Heights facility with no possibility of rebuilding or resuming operations at this location,” Carlos Montes said. “We want a complete and transparent environmental investigation to determine exactly what chemicals were released and what residents were.”

Montes and other residents say they're still suffering from the effects of the toxic fumes and smoke from the fire and stench from the rotting food inside the warehouse.

The organizations and people here are also demanding more resources to speed things along so they can get back to normalcy.

Nine-year-old Nathan Maldonado fought back tears as he expressed anger over the cleanup not happening fast enough.

“My mom, she's been feeling nauseous,” he said. “Her head is hurting. Sometimes you have to go to the hospital, and you keep on smelling the bad smells in the air.”

The warehouse fire started on June 17 at the Lineage cold storage facility on South Los Palos St. and reignited once again on June 19. A knockdown was declared on June 24; however, fire officials say the fire is still smoldering deep inside the building.

On Monday, Mayor Karen Bass issued two executive orders to speed up the recovery process.

Lineage has created an air quality monitoring site.

The exact cause of the fire is still unknown.
