California continues to report huge numbers of COVID-19 deaths

California continues to report huge numbers of COVID-19 deaths.

The 361 fatalities announced make for the state's second highest one-day total.

Governor Gavin Newsom describes it a "devastating" figure.

"This disease remains deadly. This pandemic remains deadly," Newsom says.

ICU capacity for the state has dropped to 1.1%.

1"Even as we get down to 0 percent, as has been the case in Southern California and San Joquin Valley, that doesn't mean we eliminate ICU capacity, we are now just in the surge capacity," Newsom says.

LA County's latest update shows 33 available adult ICU beds.

COVID-related hospitalizations for the county and the state are at their highest levels ever.

But Newsom says there's at least one encouraging sign for California, the 7-day average test positivity rate has dropped to 12.6%.

"One, two, three days doesn't necessarily makea trend. That trend doesn't necessarily warrant a headline but it's a modest indication of a possible sign of some good news," Newsom says.

In LA County, however, the 7-day average test positivity rate is now up to 16.3 percent.
