Restaurants are fighting back over a new California law designed to tackle junk fees.
The new law says the price on the menu has to be the final price that customers have to pay for goods and services. It makes it illegal to add on any additional fees.
In a letter to state Attorney General Rob Bonta, the California Restaurant Association disagreed that the law should apply to them, arguing that drinks and food are not goods or services. The association wants restaurants to be exempt from the rule.
Bonta immediately disagreed, saying through a spokesperson that whether food is bought from a grocery store or brought to a table, it remains under the umbrella of the law.
The disagreement could lead to a lawsuit. The law goes into effect on July 1.
