Authorities are searching for the counter-demonstrators who attacked a pro-Palestinian encampment at UCLA on April 30.

In a letter sent to the UCLA community, Chancellor Gene Block wrote that the school’s inaugural Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Safety Officer Rick Braziel is leading the investigation.

“AVC Braziel and I have directed UCPD to invest whatever resources are needed to conduct a rapid and thorough investigation into the violent attack. UCPD is currently reviewing all available footage from last Tuesday night and speaking to witnesses who were present,” Block wrote.
“We urge anyone who saw the violence firsthand or who has information about the attack to report it as soon as possible.”

The FBI and LAPD are also assisting in the investigation, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The Times also reported that detectives are using the same facial recognition technology that was used in the Jan. 6, 2021 investigation to identify those involved in the attack.

UC President Michael V. Drake, M.D., announced on Tuesday that 21st Century Policing will lead the independent investigation of actions taken at UCLA.

“Our campuses must be places where our community members can safely engage in the University of California’s mission of teaching, research, and public service,” Drake said. “This independent review will provide us with more information to shore up our ability to protect our community members and their rights while keeping them safe from harm. The Regents and I look forward to the findings.”

On May 2, police dismantled the pro-Palestinian encampment on campus and over 200 people were arrested.

On Sunday, Block announced the creation of the Office of Campus Safety.
