Wrong-way driver kills 2 in crash on 605 Freeway

CERRITOS, Calif. (KNX) — A driver going the wrong way on a freeway in Cerritos Friday collided head-on into another driver, killing both in a fiery crash.

Officers were called to the scene around 2:30 a.m. at the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway and South Street. The driver was reportedly headed northbound, then made an illegal U-turn onto the freeway and swerved into another southbound driver, according to Officer Elizabeth Kravig of the California Highway Patrol.

CHP said one of the victims was a 38-year-old woman. Her name has not yet been released. The identity, age, and gender of the driver has not been disclosed.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. It was not immediately known if there were any other injuries reported in connection with the crash.

The collision closed all southbound lanes of the 605 for several hours early Friday morning.

The incident is still under investigation.
