
EL MONTE, Calif. (KNX) — Southern California police are searching for the driver responsible for hitting a 65-year-old bicyclist and fleeing from the crash.
The hit-and-run happened just before 9 p.m. Tuesday, as the bicyclist, traveling east on Lower Azusa Road in El Monte, entered the intersection of El Monte Avenue. The driver, who was traveling in the same direction, struck the victim but never stopped, El Monte Police said.

The cyclist, whose name has not been released by authorities, died at the scene as a result of his injuries.
Little information is known about the driver other than that they were driving what appeared to be a maroon or burgundy Toyota Avalon between the model years of 2019 and 2020, police said.
Anyone with information, or who may have witnessed the crash, is asked to contact the El Monte Police Department.
According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) data, there is a hit-and-run accident happening somewhere in the United States every 43 seconds, police said in a statement. In 2020, fatalities due to Hit-and-Run accidents increased by 26% over 2019.
