L.A. County District Attorney George Gascón went a step further Friday about his review of the Menendez brothers' murder convictions, revealing an optimistic view of the brothers and potentially alluding to an outcome in their favor.

In an exclusive discussion with KNX News' Countdown 2024, the DA said, "To be honest with you, it appears that they have been rehabilitating, they have been going to college, they have been mentoring people, they have done volunteer work."

He said because the brothers went to prison 35 years ago at the ages of 19 and 21, the case is "ripe for review and that's what we're doing."

Gascón would not outright say he was leaning toward reducing or changing their sentence, instead saying, "I'm just simply telling you that based on the information that we're getting, it seems like they're rehabilitating very well, but we still have work to do."

Gascon said he hopes to make a decision "shortly."

During the announcement that his office would be reviewing the case, in a press conference on Thursday, the DA said he is keeping an open mind and, at the moment, is not leaning in any particular direction, "We have a hearing coming up on November 29th, and until we get there, we're not sure yet which direction this will go."

Some familiar with the case question the timing of his announcement as Gascón is facing an uphill battle against challenger Nathan Hochman for reelection as Los Angeles County District Attorney.

Gascón told KNX News his office has been working on the review for months but decided to make the public announcement amid renewed interest in the case brought on by the Netflix Drama about the case called Monsters, which has begun streaming recently.

He said the goal has always been to figure things out sometime between October and November.
