A Los Angeles County deputy died Saturday night from injuries he sustained during a training accident in Castaic in October.
“It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Alfredo ‘Freddy’ Flores who valiantly fought for his life after sustaining severe injuries in the line of duty,” a statement by family attorney Joe Nunez read.
On Oct. 10, 2023, Flores was training at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic in a trailer that was serving as a mobile shooting range when there was an explosion and fire. The incident left Flores and another deputy critically injured. The other deputy who was injured that day is still recovering.
The family revealed in their statement that the cause of the fire was due to a malfunction of equipment at the training center.
Addressing the tragic loss, Sherriff Robert Luna said the 22-year department veteran was remarkable not only because he wore the LASD uniform but also because of what he chose to do with his time off duty.
Luna said Flores was a big baseball fan and would often umpire a local community league baseball game.
Flores also spent his free time with family, and after talking to his kids over the weekend, Luna said, "He was absolutely their hero."
In a statement on X, the Sheriff called Flores “a beacon of strength.”
“His sudden departure left an immense void in the hearts of all who knew him,” Luna wrote.
Luna says the incident is being investigated—not only by members of the Sheriff's Department but also by ATF, with a separate investigation by Cal OSHA. He also says their mobile ranges are closed and will remain that way until further notice.
California Governor Gavin Newsom also released a statement on X.
"Jennifer and I join the Los Angeles community in grieving the profound loss of Deputy Sheriff Flores, who demonstrated unwavering dedication and bravery in his service to the state,” Newsom said. “Our heartfelt condolences are with his loved ones, friends and colleagues. Deputy Flores' legacy will continue to inspire us all.”
Flores leaves behind a wife and four children.
