Orange County (KNX) — Acupuncture can alleviate all sorts of ailments, but it does not yet have widespread popularity in western culture, despite its benefits in treating the side effects of powerful drugs and radiation.

Dr. Ruth McCarty works at Children's Health of Orange County, and she runs a practice called Open Mind Modalities. She has helped Traditional Chinese Medicine become more widely used through her guidance and teachings.
According to Dr. McCarty, "acupuncture is a supportive treatment that improves quality of life regardless of your Western diagnosis… Doctors at the hospital have seen the value of how it supports the quality of life of these kids and their families."

In most hospitals, acupuncture is covered by insurance. However, it's different when it comes to continued treatment outside of the hospital.
That's where Dr. McCarty has done some of her best work, getting grants and working with charitable organizations to make those costs disappear. Dr. McCarty says, "That continuity of care to support quality of life is very, very important. So I have worked over the years with different organizations finding funding, so these kids don't fall through the cracks."

As part of her practice, Dr. McCarty also treats her patients' family members and caretakers with acupuncture, taking the holistic approach to healthcare to a new level.
Considered a pioneer among her peers, her passion for helping people goes beyond the clinic, and she's making a significant impact in her community - Dr. Ruth McCarty of Orange County is our KNX hero of the week.
