WATCH VIDEO: California’s Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly rolls up his sleeve to get Johnson & Johnson vaccine in South LA

California’s Health and Human Services Secretary rolled up his sleeve Thursday in South LA to get the one-shot Johnson and Johnson vaccine.

It marked day one for this FEMA mobile clinic and its rollout of the new vaccine.

Dr. Mark Ghaly joined others in the community to receive the shot saying "We believe it's important that we step up and get the vaccine ourselves. It sends a signal that look, it's not just safe for California but it's safe for ourselves and our families. As a physician, I often say I never want to give advice to people that I'm not willing to take myself."

Michael Lawson, who is president and CEO of the Los Angeles Urban League, had this message for those who may be hesitant to get the vaccine.

"I am here to tell you that this is not something to be afraid of. The doctors and the scientists, who have put this together, have done this because we are losing people at a faster rate than anyone else in the country," Lawson says.

He says they need to do whatever is possible to make sure that their elders and children are safe – and the only way to do that is to take advantage of the opportunity to get vaccinated.
