DTLA 'graffiti towers' spark battle between L.A. and buildings' owner

Those graffiti-covered towers in downtown Los Angeles must be cleaned up by the end of the day, February 17th as per a motion passed unanimously at L.A. City Hall.

Los Angeles council member Kevin de Leon told KNX News' Craig Fiegener that the city will be there the next day to do it if they don't.

"I hope that they at least demonstrate good faith effort moving forward," said de Leon.

Ahead of the vote, during public comment, there were people who suggested the city buy the abandoned buildings, all three of them valued at $1.5 billion, and convert the property to housing for the homeless.

But de Leon said, "It would not be a wise investment; 504 rooms in the three towers will roughly be an estimated $3 million per room. We would be skewered beyond if we have $3 million-per-unit homeless housing... in addition to clean up."

The motion also demands the property's owners fully secure the three abandoned buildings so that people can't climb up 30 stories, in some cases, and commit death-defying acts of graffiti.
