PALM SPRINGS (CNS) - A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and fatally striking a pedestrian in Palm Springs, police said Monday.

Eric Berry of Grand Terrace was arrested and booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to a statement from the Palm Springs Police Department. He remained held on a $50,000 bail bond.
Officers responded at 6:52 p.m. Sunday to a report of a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on South Palm Canyon Drive, just north of Sunny Dunes Road, police said.

His name was not immediately released.
"The driver of the vehicle involved was located near the scene," police wrote in a statement. "Upon evaluation by the responding officers, the driver was suspected of driving under the influence."
Palm Canyon Drive was closed between Camino Parocela and Sunny Dunes Road for the investigation, but reopened by 5 a.m. Monday.
