A new federal rule from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development would ban housing affordability vouchers for families where one-or-more members are undocumented immigrants.

Los Angeles Councilmember Tim McOsker tells KNX News’ Craig Fiegener that ending the funding would break up countless local families.

“We're talking about in mixed status families, United States citizens and someone in the household who is not documented, and the proposal of the rule would be to evict those folks, which would have the effect of taking competent, really good housing that folks are in now and putting people onto the street,” he said. “We would have the federal government proposing to increase homelessness and increase poverty right here in our jurisdiction, where we have worked so hard to provide so much public housing.”

Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez said it would “destabilize” families.

“It would force people to have to move out, and right now, we have a real lack of affordable housing in this city,” she said. “These are already vulnerable, low-income, no-income community members that are doing their best to survive. There's not many places for them to go in this city where they can afford to live here.”

The L.A. City Council recently passed a resolution condemning HUD’s housing voucher change, which would ban financial housing help for mixed-status families.
