As crews were making their way into the area, something exploded.
L.A. Fire Captain Eric Scott told KNX News' Karen Adams that 11 firefighters were near the area at the time of the explosion.
All were taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center for evaluation and, according to Captain Scott, appeared to be OK with the expectation of the crew member who required emergency rescue.
Captain Scott said the seriously injured firefighter suffered significant trauma to his head and ear.
Crews on the scene halted the spread of the brush fire within about 30 minutes, and no other injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the LAPD has stated its intention to help investigate the explosion.
