First shipments subject to Trump tariffs hit L.A., Long Beach ports

At least six container ships that left China after the Trump administration announced its trade tariffs have arrived at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

Los Angeles Councilmember Tim McOsker believes this is the start of what he predicts will be empty store shelves, especially in SoCal.

"Our number one trade partner in the San Pedro Bay combined ports of L.A. and Long Beach is China," McOsker told KNX News' Craig Fiegener. "So seeing a diminution in those products is going to impact us immediately."

While it's not known for sure, many of the items in the more than 10,000 containers are believed to be goods Americans buy on Amazon and at stores like Home Depot.

McOsker said that shipments are already down 30% compared to a year ago, and with scheduled orders being canceled in what are called 'blank sailings,' shelves could be sparse for back-to-school shopping and leading into the holiday season.

As bad as local price hikes and limited supplies will be, McOsker said these issues will affect the world economy and could cost many in the shipping industry their jobs.
