The mother of a Fremont toddler killed in a shootout on an Oakland highway begged the public to help track down the killers.

It happened Saturday afternoon on I-880.

Officials said a stray bullet from a freeway shootout between two cars struck 23-month-old Jasper Wu in the head while he was in the car with his mother, Cherry Ann, and other relatives. Wu was rushed to Oakland Children’s Hospital, where he died.

“I don’t know what to say. It just happened all of a sudden. I don’t even know how to react to this tragedy,” Cherry An told KPIX 5 through an interpreter.

CHP and Oakland police closed to the northbound I-880 for a couple hours after the shooting to investigate the scene. Officials have released little information regarding the suspects; however, CHP Bay Area did report on Twitter one of the suspect vehicles was a dark Chrysler 300.

Fremont Mayor Lily Mei offered condolences to the family.

“Such a tragedy in terms of the loss of a innocent life. We need people to stand up and say this is wrong,” Mei said.

Wu was described by his family as a “good boy.” He had never met his father in person, as his father still works and lives in China, according to KPIX 5. The two would however see each other through FaceTime.

The toddler’s mother begged the public to find her son’s killers.

“I want to call on the public to help me find the killers,” An said. “I don’t want such a tragedy to happen to another person again.”

A GoFundMe was set up for the family. Over $82,400 has already been raised.
