A coalition supporting the Menendez brothers in their quest to be released from prison will hold a rally outside the office of District Attorney Nathan Hochman in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday morning.

The rally will kick off at 9 a.m. with a news conference.

It comes a week after Hochman announced that not only would his office proceed with a resentencing motion for Erik and Lyle Menendez, but that he opposed the resentencing.

"If they were to finally come forward and unequivocally and sincerely admit and completely accept responsibility for their lies of self-defense and the attempted suborning of perjury they engaged in, then the Court should weigh such new insight into the analysis of rehabilitation and resentencing -- as will the people,” Hochman said at the press conference.

Shortly after his announcement, the Justice of Erik and Lyle Coalition released a statement saying Hochman was “holding Erik, Lyle, and our family hostage.”

"Let’s be clear: Erik and Lyle are not the same young boys they were more than 30 years ago,” the statement continued. “They have apologized for their actions, which were the results of Jose’s sexual abuse and Kitty’s enablement. They have apologized for the horrific actions they took. They have apologized to us. And, they have demonstrated their atonement through actions that have helped improve countless lives. Yet, DA Hochman is effectively asking for them to publicly apologize to a checklist of actions they took in a state of shock and fear.”

The Menendez brothers were convicted in the 1989 murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty. The brothers claimed self-defense and that their father had abused them.

In October 2024, DailyMail.com published a letter written by Erik to his cousin, Andy Cano, months before the murders. In the letter, Erik wrote that he had been trying to avoid his dad but that the abuse was still happening.

The brothers’ resentencing hearing is set for April 11.
