A 30-year-old man was arrested Tuesday in connection with a stabbing that killed a Burbank elementary school teacher and injured her daughter.
Arti Varma and her daughter, Meera, were stabbed inside their home early Monday morning. Arti was killed while Meera was taken into the hospital. She’s listed in stable condition.
Police told reporters that not only was Meera the one who called 911, but she also was able to speak with officers after having surgery.
“Towards the end of the day yesterday, we were able to interview her and speak with her, so she is speaking with detectives,” Lt. Brent Fekety told reporters.
Police arrested Sergio Fraire, who they say was seen on surveillance video running from the area.
“A surveillance video we were able to track where he went and which apartment complex he went into, and then once we were there, we were able to determine which apartment he resided in and served a search warrant at that location,” Lt. Fekety continued.
Police say Fraire was cooperating, but they were still trying to determine whether he knew the victims and what the motive may have been.
