Ground was broken Wednesday for a terminal expansion at LAX that will increase the number of planes the airport can handle, but thanks to a “first-of-its-kind” building technique, construction won’t disrupt the runway.

The Midfield Satellite Concourse (MSC) South project will extend the West Gates of Tom Bradley International Terminal, adding approximately 150,000 square feet and eight gates to the center of the airport.
How will all this work happen with almost zero impact on airport operations? Using what Los Angeles World Airports CEO Justin Erbacci says is a more efficient, "more cost favorable" building technique called Offsite Construction and Relocation (OCR).

"[OCR] allows us to really minimize the impact of the operations at this airport as if we had to build everything here," Erbacci said.
In a press release, LAX Public Relations said, "The OCR technique is both innovative and adaptive, saving public funds and time with a high degree of building control and supervision."
With completion estimated to be in 2025, the extra space is expected to result in more flight options for travelers while improving overall safety operations at the airport - just in time for the World Cup Soccer finals to take place in L.A..
