Katie Porter has long been considered a rising star in the Democratic Party, garnering a reputation as one of the toughest question-askers in Congress. But after giving up her Orange County House seat in a losing bid for the Senate, what comes next?

Porter joined KNX News’ daily political show Countdown 2024 to answer that question herself.

Listen here:

For now, Porter said she’s focused on helping to elect other Democrats, from Vice President Kamala Harris to local House candidates like Will Rollins, Josh Harder, and Dave Min.

“The path to the House of Representatives runs right through California and we're not getting a lot of attention from our Democratic presidential candidates because they're working on swing [states],” she said.

But what happens on Nov. 6? Porter was coy about whether she has her sights set on the governor’s office, saying only that she’s “thinking about how to make a difference.” But she did mention that the biggest challenge our next governor needs to be focused on is housing – an issue Porter pointed out she has ample experience with.

Whether she runs for governor or another office, Porter said she learned plenty from her unsuccessful Senate campaign.

“I think one of the real opportunities for me was to get into parts and pockets of California that are really different than Orange County, that have different economies, that have different challenges,” she said. “I picked up a lot of insights into what unites us as Californians.”
