Fans of Friends of Big Bear Valley’s bald eagle nest cam were thrilled to see all three of Jackie and Shadow’s chicks hatch this month. It was the first time any of the pair’s eggs have hatched since 2022, when their chick Spirit successfully left the nest.
But Friday morning, amid a snowstorm in Big Bear, only two of the three eaglets could be seen feeding. What happened to number three?
FOBBV Executive Director Sandy Steers said not to panic yet.
“We don't know for sure that we're not seeing him,” she told KNX News. “There's a part of the nest, a big part that you cannot see because the snow is piled high, so we don't know the exact situation.”
Steers said it’s possible the third eaglet is still alive and well in the part of the nest that’s blocked from view. Until we know for sure, all we can do is “take what comes in each moment.”
“I just would like people to watch and observe and see what happens and watch what Jackie and Shadow do, because going to all the negativity and making assumptions about everything doesn't help any of us,” she said.
