On Monday, Judge Lisa Jaskol signed an order rescheduling the start of trial from June 5 to Nov. 5. In their court papers, Ruck's attorneys said two other people came forward in January and February claiming to also have been hurt in the Oct. 31, 2023, accident, but that neither have sued.
"Defendant has invited (Vela) and both claimants to attend a private mediation to discuss a resolution of all claims," Ruck's attorneys stated in their court papers in support of delaying the start of trial.
Both sides will be ready for trial Nov. 5 if the case is not resolved before then, Ruck's lawyers further state.
In his suit brought in December 2023, Vela alleges that Ruck "abruptly and forcefully accelerated" his truck while stopped at a red light at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and La Brea Avenue.
Ruck's truck struck the rear bumper of Vela's car, knocking him into another vehicle in the intersection, the suit states. Ruck's truck then hit yet another vehicle before smashing into a nearby pizzeria, according to the suit.
Vela was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in an ambulance and his car was totaled, according to the suit.
After the crash, Ruck told TMZ, "I'm fine and thank God nobody was killed."
Ruck's insurance company, State Farm, has "ghosted us for weeks despite repeated calls and letters seeking to work out an amicable settlement," according to a previous statement by Neama Rahmani, one of the plaintiff's lawyers.
Ruck, 68, had his first film role in the 1983 drama "Bad Boys," in which he played Carl Brennan, acting alongside Sean Penn. He portrayed the character Connor Roy on "Succession" and played Cameron Frye in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."
