Our KNX Hero of the Week has spent her career helping others. She's now encouraging young women in Southern California to follow their dreams!
The daughter of a preacher, serving others was something that started at a young age, for Dolores Morton. "Every Sunday after church, we would go and visit homebound seniors, or individuals who might be in an assisted living facility, or we'd visit people in the hospital," explains Delores. "We were always taking care of others in our community. So, it was just a part of how I grew up."
Southern Louisiana is where Delores was raised, and where she went to college. But, for the last four years, she has called Southern California home.
She's the CEO of Step Up, a nation-wide nonprofit that offers mentorship programs for the next generation of female leaders. Each year, they serve around two-thousand young ladies, many who live in underserved communities.

The pandemic put a snag in the programming, so workshops and meetings had to go online. But, Delores says it helped them expand their reach to girls around the world. "Young women from Puerto Rico, India, and Ghana have been able to participate in the program!" exclaims the LSU grad. "The beauty of technology, right?"
Because of her leadership skills and her years of dedication to help others, Delores has received several honors, including being named a 2012 "Champion of Change" by former President Barack Obama.
Facing the challenges of a pandemic, Delores continues to excel, leading her team through a very tough year. Executive Coach Dawn Kohler calls her a visionary. "She sees what's possible," remarks Dawn, founder of Kohler & Company. "She was able to overcome great obstacles, given COVID-19. Her courage and her ability to persevere is what I think of, when I think of Delores."
"You know, I've realized that so many young women are interested in growing themselves, and leading in their community," says Delores. "They have the capacity and the ability, but not always the opportunity. And so, it's tremendously important to me to provide that opportunity."
"It's kind of at the core of my being," explains the Step Up CEO. "When I look around the White House, the State House... to see women lead, it gives me energy, in knowing that the young women we work with are the next generation of leaders! It makes me happy, I can't wait to see what they become!"
