LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The Los Angeles City Council Friday approved recommendations that will allow the city to raise the Progress Pride Flag in the Civic Center during Pride Month next year.

Councilman Tim McOsker introduced a motion calling for the city to take the necessary steps to raise the Progress Pride Flag in the Civic Center, which includes City Hall, City Hall East, City Hall South and other municipal facilities, during the month of June.

The City Charter, section 7.66, prohibits flags other than the American, California and city flags from being raised at City Hall or any other city facilities.

However, the council in a 13-0 vote, with Councilman Curren Price absent from Friday's meeting, supported McOsker's motion. The motion directed the city attorney to prepare and present an ordinance amending city code 7.66 to allow the city to raise the Progress Pride Flag.

"This is our opportunity to have an ordinance come back and give us the chance next year to raise the Progress Pride Flag over City Hall and other government buildings," McOsker said.

"It is an important message for us to be saying that we're not only accepting, but we're embracing and celebrating Pride as we will next year again."

The motion also requested Mayor Karen Bass' office and the city's chief legislative analyst to update the city's flag policy and notify departments to ensure proper flag etiquette is followed.

The council's Rules, Elections and Intergovernmental Relations Committee previously approved the motion.

The councilman recognized that, under the direction of Supervisors Janice Hahn and Lindsey Horvath, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution to raise the Progress Pride Flag over the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration and county facilities.

McOsker said he would be "remiss" if he didn't point out that his motion was motivated by his constituents and Hahn, a longtime friend, for setting an example.
