Homeless encampment near Gardena to be cleared out

Encampment

A homeless encampment near Gardena will be cleared out beginning Wednesday.

The encampment is located along both sides of W. Compton Boulevard.

L.A. County Pathway Home Program will be clearing out the encampment. The L.A. County Sheriff's Department will be there to assist.

Sheriff Robert Luna told KNX News’ Jon Baird there have been complaints about this camp and that some of the people in the camp are victims of crimes that go unreported.

“We have come out here even weeks in advance, advising folks that we're gonna be doing this today,” he said. “So it's not a surprise to anybody. Everybody has been offered services, and we're really hoping that everybody takes us up on it so they can get off the street and at least get into temporary housing.”

But Tina, who lives in an RV with her significant other at the camp, told Baird the offer being presented to them just doesn’t cut it, and that to get the temporary housing, they have to give up their RV.

“I think it's unfair that they're only offering two weeks of housing in a hotel when it takes a long time to save up for an RV,” she said. “Maybe for some people, but for people who don't have a job, it's very difficult to save money, especially when you're living day by day the way that we are.”

She added that she wants a chance to get back on her feet, but that the two weeks of housing won’t allow for that.

Deputies will begin clearing out the area at 9 a.m.
