As a Castaic landfill inches closer to installing a cover over portion of the facility to address foul odors, Los Angeles County officials Friday announced they intend to launch an online survey to assess its effectiveness.

Waste Connections, the operator of the Chiquita Canyon Landfill, is expected to install a "geomembrane cover" early next month as part of a solution to mitigate noxious odors that has plagued nearby residents for more than a year.

In response, the L.A. County Department of Public Health will administer a health survey, called Community Experiences: Survey on Odors and Health Impacts near the Chiquita Canyon Landfill Incident. The survey will be available online in English and Spanish, starting Monday at 6 p.m. at the following websites:

In February, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ordered the landfill operator to take action, which included the installation of a geomembrane landfill cover. In addition, another project known as the Western Slope Excavation is expected to have the "most meaningful impact" on the odors, according to L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger's office, who represents the Fifth District, which includes the Santa Clarita Valley.

"Community feedback is vital to determining if the odor mitigation work to stop the terrible odors coming from Chiquita Canyon Landfill actually make a difference," Barger said in a statement. "It's important for residents to feel heard and that their health and well-being continue being prioritized."
