Social workers will soon be set up inside Los Angeles County libraries to help the unhoused people seeking shelter there.

L.A. County Mental Health Deputy Director Latina Jackson said beginning in June, mental health, social, and homeless outreach workers will be stationed at county libraries to “connect individuals to more longitudinal care.”

“We know that libraries have always historically been a sort of refuge for people who are experiencing homelessness to, you know, come in from the elements, have a place to use the restroom,” Jackson said.

She said the outreach workers can connect people to outpatient clinics, social services, and other supports to help them on their journey to housing.

“We meet people where they are and whatever they're interested in partaking in, and it may just be having a conversation, getting a little emotional support,” Jackson said. “It may be like, you know, having a cup of coffee with someone. Those are the strategies that we intend to take.”
