Alberto Gutierrez was taken from an Echo Park construction site and died on February 27th. Mayor Karen Bass tells KNX News’s Craig Fiegener that he was denied life-saving meds for diabetes.

“You absolutely need daily medication, otherwise you can be in a life-threatening situation, and that's what this was,” she said. “They apparently denied him medical care so long, they didn't pay attention to him until he collapsed, and at that point, it was too late and he didn't recover, and he was only 48 years old.”

The family has put up a GoFundMe page to help cover the cost of funeral expenses. As of Wednesday, they’ve raised $11,349.

KNX News has reached out to officials with the Department of Homeland Security for comment.
